if you have ever ran into a problem such as downloading from KaZaA caused you a lot of pop-ups in a website, or, accidentally ran into an illegal website... or simply are getting more pop-ups than normal, go to C:program filesinternet explorer and delete the file HMMAPI.dll. Be careful in its capitalization and spelling. Some websites alter the content of this file making it link suddenly to unwanted offerts, pages, and adverticements. Somehow, it seems that windows has a coppy of the file in case its deleted. I think imediately after you delete it, a brand new file with the name hmmapi.dll, without any caps, appears in the internet explorer folder. However, keep the file just in case you cannot open the internet explorer program or ran into a problem for doing this. I did it like 2 days ago and I am not getting any pop-ups, except these sites that have sponsors or publicers's websites.
That is a great way to block pop-ups, Lou. I have found a great alternative.
I go into tools menu, internet options. then hit control tab to get to security. highlight the internet zone. tab to security level default level. hit enter on that. then, disable activex related items in the dialog. Not only do pages load faster but pop-ups magically disappear. and, if this is creating problems for certain sites that you trust, like windows update, add then to the trusted sites zone. This works for me and though I would share.
Oh, you may get a dialog that says "your security settings prevent running activex controls on this page. the page may not display correctly." but if your like me, it does not matter how the page looks visually.
